When the time comes to make an investment in dentures, make sure you take the proper steps to ensure the longevity of your denture

Below are some of the top helpful tips on how to properly maintain your dentures:

  • Wash your dentures daily! This is very important in order to not infect the denture with a virus or bacteria that can spread to your mouth. Use directions from your denture provider or denture cleanser, hand soap, or light dish soap. DO NOT use toothpaste on your dentures, as it is too abrasive.

  • When cleaning, use the right tools. There are special scrubbers and brushes that are used for the cleaning of your dentures. If you do not have a specialized brush, then you can use a new toothbrush that has hard bristles. For dentures with a soft reline use only soft brushes.

  • Don’t allow your dentures to dry out. Make sure to soak them in water ONLY.  When your dentures dry out, they have a greater chance of cracking.

  • Take your dentures out at night to help relieve pressure on your gums.

  • When handling your dentures handle them over water or a soft surface so that if you drop them they will not break. Fold a towel and place it on countertop.

  • To keep everything clean, take a soft brush or cloth to your mouth before inserting your dentures.  Don’t forget to continue to brush your remaining teeth!

  • Continue to see your dentist. Just because you no longer may have teeth, does not mean you won't need your dentist. Special attention must still be taken for gum care and the proper fitting of your dentures.
